What is Instant Messaging and Presence?

In today’s age, most users are familiar with the use of Instant Messaging as a tool for quick ad-hoc communication and are being used more widely as a business communication tool. Public Instant Messaging however does bring a certain element of risk within the business due to the wide public access and lack of control around this environment. Organisations are also not able to track conversations and data sent via Public Instant messaging tools.

With Office Communicator 2007, you can maintain a log of all incoming and outgoing calls and IM sessions, including the date and time, subject, participant names, and—if applicable—IM text and notes from Office OneNote 2007. Work Together in Real Time in the Office and on the Road. Office Communicator 2007 improves your ability to communicate in real time from various locations and devices.

When your users log on to their machines, they automatically log into presence. This pulls data from Active Directory and Microsoft Exchange Server 2007 to put complete directory information and real-time availability at users’ fingertips. Presence depends on your existing infrastructure, so there is no data entry and no new objects to build in the directory.

Presence unites contact information-phone numbers, e-mail addresses, and instant message accounts-with all the ways you communicate: phone, conferencing, instant messaging, and e-mail. With presence, you can start a conversation with one click.

Presence information travels throughout the computing environment. Wherever a contact’s name appears-in an email, on a team-site, or a Document Workspace, status and contact information travels with the name. Presence integrates with Windows Mobile devices, so real-time status and contact information is available when you’re on the road too.
